How to Troubleshoot Garage Door Photo Eyes

Your garage door closes normally from the wall button but reverses the moment it reaches the floor. Or it will only close when you hold the wall control down. Those are classic reasons to troubleshoot garage door photo eyes before assuming the opener has failed. The photo-eye system is a required safety device, and a small alignment, wiring, or lens problem can stop an otherwise healthy door from closing.

Photo eyes sit near the bottom of the vertical tracks, usually 4 to 6 inches above the floor. One sends an invisible infrared beam and the other receives it. When that beam is blocked or interrupted, the opener will not close the door by remote command. The system is designed to prevent the door from closing on a person, pet, vehicle, or object.

Start With the Symptoms

A photo-eye fault is likely when the door opens normally but refuses to close, reverses right away, or closes only while you continuously hold the wall button. That hold-to-close function is an override meant to get the door shut under supervision. It is not a repair and should not become the normal way you operate the door.

First, make sure the door itself is not binding. A damaged roller, bent track, broken spring, or obstruction can also make a door reverse. Disconnect the opener only if you can do so safely, then move the door by hand. It should travel smoothly and stay roughly balanced. If it is heavy, jerky, or difficult to lift, address the door hardware before chasing an electronic fault.

If the door moves smoothly and the opener light flashes or the motor clicks when you try to close it, focus on the sensors.

How to Troubleshoot Garage Door Photo Eyes

Clear the beam path and clean both lenses

Start with the obvious items because they cause a large share of service calls. Remove leaves, cobwebs, stored items, and anything else between the sensors. A broom leaning near the track, a trash can, or even a low-hanging piece of weatherstripping can interrupt the beam.

Wipe each lens with a soft, clean cloth. Dirt, road salt, spider webs, and moisture can weaken the signal. Do not use abrasive pads or harsh solvents that can scratch the lens. If condensation is collecting inside a sensor housing, the unit may be cracked and should be replaced.

Look closely at the brackets. Photo eyes are often bumped by bicycles, lawn equipment, and boxes moved through the garage. A bracket that is bent or loose can let a sensor shift just enough to lose the beam.

Check the indicator lights

Most modern photo-eye systems use small diagnostic LEDs. Commonly, the sending eye shows a steady amber or yellow light and the receiving eye shows a steady green light when the beam is aligned. Color conventions vary by opener brand, so check the label on the sensor or the opener manual if the lights do not match that pattern.

A light that is off usually points to no power, a loose wire, a broken wire, or a failed sensor. A flickering or dim light often means the sensors are misaligned or the signal is weak. If both lights are solid but the opener still will not close, inspect the wiring connections and the opener diagnostics next.

Avoid relying on the color alone. What matters most is whether the lights are steady and whether they change when you block the beam with your hand. A receiving light that goes out when the beam is blocked, then returns steadily when clear, is responding as it should.

Align the sensors precisely

Photo eyes do not need to look perfectly level to the floor. They need to face each other directly. Loosen the wing nut or mounting hardware just enough to move the sensor, then aim it toward the sensor across the opening. Watch the receiving sensor light as you make small adjustments.

Once its indicator glows steadily, tighten the bracket without twisting the sensor out of position. Check the alignment again after tightening. This detail matters because a door vibration can make a barely aligned sensor work one day and fail the next.

If sunlight hits the receiving eye at certain times of day, the door may work in the morning and refuse to close in late afternoon. Shade from the track, a small sensor hood, or a slight repositioning can help, provided both sensors remain securely mounted and properly aligned. Do not relocate photo eyes higher on the track or bypass them. They must remain close to the floor to protect the full doorway.

Inspect the low-voltage wiring

The thin bell wire running from each photo eye to the opener is exposed to damage. Inspect the full visible run, especially near staples, track brackets, the bottom of the wall, and the opener terminals. Look for pinched insulation, cuts, loose staples, corrosion, and wires pulled out of the sensor housing.

A staple driven too tightly can cut through the insulation and create an intermittent short. A wire may also break inside the insulation after years of vibration. If the sensor light flickers when you gently move the wire, replace that section rather than trying to tape over a damaged conductor.

At the opener, confirm the photo-eye wires are fully seated in the correct terminals. Many openers use separate terminal positions for wall controls and safety sensors. Photograph the existing connections before removing anything, then reconnect one wire at a time. Keep sensor wiring away from moving door parts and sharp metal edges.

Rule out a failed sensor or opener issue

If one sensor has no light after you confirm its wiring is intact and properly connected, that sensor may have failed. Photo eyes are usually sold as matched sets for a reason: transmitter and receiver compatibility matters. Replacing both sensors is often the more reliable repair, especially on an older system.

Use replacement sensors designed for your opener brand and model. Universal parts can work in some applications, but they are not always a direct match for diagnostic behavior, mounting style, or terminal configuration. OEM-quality replacement parts reduce the risk of another no-close problem after installation.

If both sensors show the correct steady lights, wiring tests good, and the door still reverses, check the opener's force settings, travel limits, and error code display. A door that strikes the floor and reverses may have a limit-setting issue rather than a photo-eye issue. A door that reverses partway down may be binding at a damaged roller, hinge, track, or cable area.

Do Not Bypass the Safety System

Temporary jumper wires, taped sensor lenses, or permanently holding the wall button are not acceptable fixes. They remove a critical safety feature and can allow the door to close on an obstruction. A garage door is heavy equipment, not a place for workarounds.

There is one narrow exception during diagnosis: holding the wall button can help confirm that the opener is responding to a photo-eye fault. Stay in view of the entire door, keep people and pets clear, and stop immediately if the door moves unevenly or binds. Once the test is complete, repair the actual fault.

When Replacement Is the Better Call

Replace photo eyes when the housing is cracked, water has entered the lens area, the LED will not light with verified power, or alignment will not hold because the bracket is damaged. Replace worn brackets and secure loose wiring at the same time. A new sensor mounted on a weak bracket can create the same problem again.
